Roblox Script Optimization
Improve script performance with profiling, efficient loops, object pooling, and memory management.
Introduction
Performance problems manifest as lag, stuttering, and mobile players leaving your game. Before optimizing, profile with MicroProfiler and Script Performance window to find actual bottlenecks. This hub covers proven optimization patterns for Roblox Lua.
Profiling First
Open View → Script Performance in Studio during Play mode. Sort by activity. Optimize the top offenders first. MicroProfiler shows frame-by-frame script time. Do not optimize code that is not a measured bottleneck.
Efficient Lua Patterns
Cache service references: local Players = game:GetService('Players'). Use object pooling for frequently created/destroyed instances. Disconnect events when no longer needed. Prefer Heartbeat over while true do wait() loops. Batch DataStore operations.
Use Cases
- Large player count games
- Mobile optimization
- Memory leak debugging
Best Practices
- Profile before optimizing
- Disconnect unused event connections
- Use task.defer and task.spawn over spawn() and delay()
Troubleshooting
Script runs but nothing happens in-game
Verify the script type matches its location. Server Scripts belong in ServerScriptService; LocalScripts in StarterPlayerScripts or StarterGui. Check the Output window in Studio for error messages.
Changes don't appear after editing
Stop and restart Play mode in Studio. Some scripts cache values on first run. For published games, republish after testing locally.
